Samsung is reportedly gearing up to introduce a significant new health feature to its flagship smartwatch, the Galaxy Watch Ultra. According to recent reports, the upcoming update will bring the ability to detect irregular heart rhythms, potentially providing users with early warnings of potential cardiac issues. Read out all details here.

Samsung will finally be enabling its Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN) feature on its new and recent Galaxy Watch models, following the release of a few additional features that were previously absent from older Galaxy Watch models, such as the Galaxy Watch 6 series. The IHRN feature was recently added to the Galaxy Watch 4 series, but now it will also be added to Samsung's most advanced Watch Ultra. Starting with the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and going all the way up to the most recent Galaxy Watch Ultra, all the watches using the BioActive sensor on their case backs will soon be compatible with the IHRN feature.

A report by SamMobile claims that Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN), a crucial health monitoring feature, is now available on Samsung's Galaxy Watch Ultra, the most recent smartwatch. Samsung claims that the IRHN feature continuously monitors for indications of atrial fibrillation (AFib) and integrates with the on-demand Electrocardiogram (ECG) function. The BioActive sensors found in the most recent and new Samsung Galaxy Watch models are responsible for all of this.

Samsung claims that the FDA has approved the feature to assist in identifying AFib symptoms early on. Unlike standalone blood pressure monitors (some of which can detect AFib), a smartwatch is worn on the wearer's wrist at all times and can be activated as needed. This kind of functionality is helpful on a smartwatch, as the majority of AFib cases are asymptomatic.

Although Samsung had previously revealed the feature with earlier Galaxy Watch models, that was many years ago. The source claims that the feature is only now available in India because obtaining certifications for it took some time. In May 2023, Samsung formally announced that it had received approval to implement the feature on models worldwide. In India, clearances most likely took even longer. Other features like electrocardiogram (ECG) and blood pressure monitoring were added to Galaxy Watch models in India only recently.

Users must install the Samsung Health Monitor app, a separate app that also activates the previously released ECG and blood pressure monitoring features, in order to activate the feature. A 58MB update was just released for the app to version 1.3.4.004. Once the update is finished, the feature will be enabled via a notification in the app.
