Frostbite occurs when skin and underlying tissues freeze due to prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures. It most commonly affects extremities like fingers, toes, nose, and ears, leading to numbness and tissue damage if left untreated.

The initial signs of frostbite include red or pale skin, a prickling sensation, and numbness. Skin may feel cold and firm to the touch. If you notice these, take immediate action to warm up and protect the affected areas.

As frostbite progresses, symptoms become more severe: skin turns bluish or purple, feels hard and waxy, and may be completely numb. Blisters may form, and in extreme cases, the tissue can permanently freeze and die.

The best way to prevent frostbite is to dress in layers. Start with moisture-wicking base layers, add insulating layers like fleece, and finish with windproof and waterproof outer layers to protect against wind and wetness.

Keep your fingers, toes, ears, and nose warm and covered. Wear insulated gloves, thick socks, and a hat that covers your ears. Use face masks or balaclavas to protect your face from extreme cold and wind.
