iOS 18.2 features
On Wednesday, Apple released the iOS 18.2 update for the iPhone all over the world. It comes one day after iOS 18.2 Release Candidate (RC) 2 was made available, adding to the list of Apple Intelligence features that the Cupertino-based tech behemoth had previously unveiled. The most recent version integrates ChatGPT, Genmoji, and Image Playground. Along with adding more languages to Apple's artificial intelligence (AI) suite, it also includes a new visual lookup feature that is only available on the iPhone 16 series.

iOS 18.2 is now available for these iPhone models

According to Apple, the most recent iOS 18.2 update is available for download on all iPhone models that were compatible with the original iOS 18 update. However, only the iPhone 16 series, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max have access to Apple Intelligence features.

More English-speaking countries like Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK are joining it. With the exception of China and the EU, where it will launch in April of next year, the AI suite is accessible on the iPhone everywhere.

iOS 18.2 Update features
Apple described the new features coming to the iPhone with the iOS 18.2 update in a newsroom post. Among the highlights is Image Playground, a brand-new stand-alone application that combines three features and gives users additional options for improving their self-expression. Based on textual prompts, it uses generative AI to produce images in various styles, like animation or illustration. Next is Genmoji, which functions similarly but is only compatible with emojis. According to Apple, the generated images and emojis can be shared in programs like Keynote, Notes, and Messages.

Similar to Samsung's AI-powered Sketch to Image feature, Image Wand in the Notes app converts a rough sketch into a related image. Additionally, it can produce an image. Additionally, it can use on-device generative AI models to generate an image within the app based on the typed or handwritten text.

Although Apple debuted Writing Tools with iOS 18.1 in October, their capabilities have been expanded with the most recent iOS 18.2 update. Users can specify the changes they would like to see, like making it more dynamic or rewriting it as a poem, by using the new Describe Your Change option. It is accessible throughout the system and in third-party apps, and it complements the current Rewrite, Proofread, and Summarise tools.

Now, the new Visual Intelligence feature is available to users of the iPhone 16 series. Apple claims that by utilizing the new Camera Control button, it is a visual lookup tool that enables users to quickly learn about objects and locations. It has the ability to detect phone numbers or email addresses, translate them between languages, summarize and copy text, and add them to contacts. They can also solve a math problem, ask ChatGPT for more information, or search Google for a product they like.

And speaking of which, ChatGPT is available for the iPhone. With the help of OpenAI's AI chatbot, Siri, Apple's voice assistant, can now comprehend documents and images and provide users more detailed answers to their questions.

For specific queries, Siri can recommend that a user access ChatGPT and give straightforward responses. Additionally, it can use native writing tools to create content. iPhone users who have a paid ChatGPT account can use their account to access more potent OpenAI models, according to Apple, although this feature requires optional sign-in.

The business makes it clear that OpenAI doesn't keep track of requests or use the information to train its models. In order to keep sessions from being connected, it also hides their IP addresses.

Apple is expected to bring Visual Intelligence to iPhone 15 Pro users in a future software update. Users will likely be able to trigger the feature using the Action Button or a dedicated button in the Control Center. The update is expected to arrive with iOS 18.4. Here’s how it might work.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro May Soon Get Visual Intelligence Feature; Likely iOS 18.4
Apple Intelligence is available for iPhone 15 Pro and later, but there’s an exclusive feature for iPhone 16 models - Visual Intelligence. Some believed this was because the iPhone 15 Pro lacked Camera Control, but that all changed with the iPhone 16e – which supports Visual Intelligence. Now Apple has confirmed that the feature will soon be available to iPhone 15 Pro owners, too.

What Exactly is Visual Intelligence?

Think of it as a smarter camera and image processing system. It's rumoured to go beyond simply recognizing objects in a photo. Instead, it could analyze scenes in real time, providing users contextual information and interactive options.

How might it work?

Imagine pointing your iPhone at a restaurant. Visual Intelligence could instantly pull up reviews, menus, and even reservation options. Or, if you're looking at a landmark, it could display historical information or directions. It could even translate signs in real time. The possibilities are vast.

Advancements in on-device machine learning and AI could power this feature. The iPhone's powerful processors could analyze images and videos instantly without a constant internet connection. This would make the feature fast and reliable, even in areas with limited connectivity.

The potential benefits are huge. Visual Intelligence could make the iPhone an even more powerful tool for everyday tasks, from exploring new places to learning about the world. It could also have accessibility applications, assisting users with visual impairments by providing detailed descriptions of their surroundings.

Of course, these are just rumours. Apple is known for its secrecy; we won't know until they make an official announcement. However, the possibility of a "Visual Intelligence" feature is exciting and could mark a major step forward in how we use our smartphones. Keep eye out on updates as we get closer to the expected release of iOS 18.4.
