ChatGPT Can Now Remember All Your Past Conversations Like a Real Personal Assistant
OpenAI has introduced a new ChatGPT AI model that references past conversations to deliver more personalised responses in the future. Users can manage memory through settings, opting to save or delete specific details. Privacy controls are built in, with options to disable memory or use temporary chats that don’t store or influence future interactions.

Announcing the update on X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called it a “surprisingly great feature” that points to something bigger: AI that evolves with you over time. “It points at something we are excited about: AI systems that get to know you over your life, and become extremely useful and personalised,” he wrote.
This upgrade offers numerous benefits. Users will no longer need to repeat information across chat sessions, streamlining workflows and making interactions more efficient. For instance, if a user previously mentioned their dietary restrictions or preferred writing style, ChatGPT can incorporate this knowledge into future responses without being explicitly reminded. This allows for a more seamless and intuitive experience, mimicking how a human assistant would operate.

OpenAI emphasises user control over this new feature. Users can manage their "memory" in the settings, with the option to disable it entirely or clear specific memories. A "Temporary Chat" mode is also available for conversations users don't want to be saved or influence future interactions, ensuring privacy when needed.
The improved memory feature is currently rolling out to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers. OpenAI has stated that Team, Enterprise, and Education users will gain access in the coming weeks. However, due to ongoing regulatory reviews, the feature will not be immediately available in the EEA, UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein.
This advancement marks a significant step towards creating powerful and deeply personalized AI systems, paving the way for AI companions that truly understand and assist users over extended periods.
