OpenAI is reportedly developing a new social media platform that could directly compete with Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) and Meta’s offerings. According to the report, the AI company based in San Francisco intends to incorporate AI features into the social application, though specifics about the integration remain unclear at this time. The platform is reported to rival the likes of Elon Musk's X (previously called Twitter) and social media platforms owned by Mark Zuckerberg's Meta. Curiously, both X and Meta have lately introduced AI functionalities to their platforms. The report comes only a few days following the release of OpenAI's GPT-4.1 series of AI models.
OpenAI's Alleged Social Application May Be Built on ChatGPT
The Verge stated that OpenAI intends to create a social network resembling “X.” Quoting several unnamed sources, the report stated that an internal version of the platform has already been developed. The prototype is said to concentrate on the image-generation feature powered by ChatGPT's GPT-4o. The "social" component encompasses a public feed, where generated images probably show up.
OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman has allegedly solicited opinions on the prototype from individuals beyond the organization. The report was unable to verify if the intention is to develop an independent app or to incorporate this social experience into ChatGPT. Interestingly, the company's video creation platform Sora features a comparable feed, but it misses the social aspect since the creators of the images and videos do not appear on the feed page.
